Viktoria Shumskaya is one of the most promising mid-career artists. Shumskaya was born in Ukraine in 1968. She studied in Ural College of Applied Art and Arts, UA from 1985 to 1989 and in Kharkov State Academy of Design and Arts, UA from 1996 to 2002. In 2002 she was awarded the Cultural City Network scholarship (Gratz, Austria).
Having passed through various stages of artistic quest particular to artists who developed in the post-Soviet space, Vika Shumskaya has createded her recognizable style. This delicate and complex painting balancing on the verge of abstraction and reality is an active experiment with mixed media. Solo shows of Shumskya were held at key exibition spaces in Russia and Ukraine. Her works were included in the main project of 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary art (2013), and in the project “Not a Museum*.A Laboratory of Aesthetic Suspicions” of Manifesta 10 parallel programme. Vika Shumskaya lives and works in Branska-Bystrica, Slovakia
