Victor Ribas

Victor Ribas was born in 1967 in the Jewish Autonomous territory of the USSR. Since 2000 he has lived and worked in Moscow. 

In 2008 Victor Ribas unveiled his technique of fractal linear photography in Karlsruhe, Germany. He is a professional artist, director, graduate of the Khabarovsk Institute of Arts and Culture and included in the rating: TOP100 Established Artists of Russia. 

Viktor Rybas is a pioneer artist in creating photographic portraits with laser lighting. Linear fractal portraits, as the author calls his artworks since 2006, scientifically speaking, are made of tracks that laser beams leave on the surface of objects in darkness. 

This laconic technique brings precise and impressive results. Looking at the photos, we can see the essence of things, and easily understand their properties. Viktor’s works reveal unexpected and hardly visible individual features of depicted persons. We can clearly see their age, gender, social status and occupation.

 The author considers it to be a fractal way of depicting human feelings, a method of generating twodimensional stochastic fractals. The artist presents himself as a live system to automatically guide the laser beam on a subconscious level. And, of course, the beam will always focus on details that seem for the artist to be the most interesting. This feedback is very similar to the process of cyclic iteration in the construction of stochastic fractals.

According to the artist, a laser beam illuminates the object and creates an invisible bond, subordinate to the artist’s brain center of visual perception. This feedback is very similar to a process of cyclic iteration in the construction of stochastic fractals. 

Therefore, in the end, we see a completely unusual, but recognizable image. It looks more like a hand drawn graphics. But instead of pencil movements Victor Rybas moves laser lights.

 Victor Rybas is a professional artist, film maker; a graduate of Institute of Fine Arts and Culture (Khabarovsk, RF). He lives and works in Moscow.
